Condition is Key Mr Andrews, of Scottow Antiques , has a long history of specialising in the antique ceramics market, and he believes that as with any antique ceramics the condition of the piece is vital when purchasing an item. The condition will ultimately affect its value, attractiveness and how desirable the piece may be. To ascertain whether your piece is of Japanese or Chinese origin look at the whiteness of the porcelain, in general Chinese Imari porcelain tended to be brighter than their original Japanese counterparts. Dating your Imari Porcelain Imari porcelain that features bright red, blue, or green porcelain was made in the early part of the 18th C, and was known as Kakiemon Imari; this type of porcelain evolved into Kinrande Imari, which used red, blue and gold in its glaze. These styles of Imari porcelain very much dominated the European market at the time. Diversify in your designs The range of designs was vast so why not amalgamate designs, which include tapestry, birds, animals, floral scenes and people, into your collection.

Imari ware , also called Arita ware , Japanese porcelain made at the Arita kilns in Hizen province. Among the Arita porcelains are white glazed wares, pale gray-blue or gray-green glazed wares known as celadons, black wares, and blue-and-white wares with underglaze painting, as well as overglaze enamels. Following the late 16th-century expansion of glazed ceramic production, porcelain-like wares were introduced. An advanced type of continuous step-chamber kiln , necessary for porcelain production, made it possible to achieve an efficient method of mass production.

Porcelain manufacturing soon became a major industry in the region, fostered by the protection and strict monopoly policies of the Saga fief. The wares were shipped throughout the country and widely exported from the port of Imari by the Dutch East India Company to other parts of the world. Sometime before , porcelain production had finally spread to other parts of Japan. In its formative period, Arita ware was affected by the impetus of Korean craftsmen and by the popularity of Chinese wares; but by the midth century, native Japanese designs began to predominate, especially in the development of such overglaze enameled wares as Nabeshima , Kakiemon , and Old Imari.

Nabeshima ware first appeared in the late 17th century. It is poised and highly refined, though sometimes rather lacking in vigour. Kakiemon, dating from the midth century, was the first enameled ware to appear.

Imari Ware is the Japanese porcelain produced in the locality of Arita in southern Japan and exported around the world through the nearby port of Imari. Arita Ware, as Imari Ware should really be know, was first produce in the early s. Exports to Europe peaked at the end of the 17 th century and by the s Chinese porcelain had largely displaced the Japanese wares on the export market. Its manufacture, however, is still an important local industry to the present day.

The town of Arita in the prefecture of Saga on the southern Japanese island of Kyushu is the birthplace of Japanese ceramics. Tradition has it that porcelain manufacture began in the early 17 th Century with the discovery of china clay kaolinite deposits and the forced immigration of potters from Korea. The first Arita porcelains were plain white wares or white ware with underglaze blue decoration and these were exported to Europe through the Dutch East India Company.

From the about more highly decorated Imari Ware was produced and when the Chinese trade was disrupted by civil war the Dutch East India Company turned to the Arita kilns to supply their European markets. From about the Arita wares flooded into European markets and the trade continued until Chinese manufacture of Imari-styled ware recommenced, displacing the Japanese originals in the mid th century.

The best known styles are Ko-imari, and Iro-Nabeshima where the colour palette was restricted to red and blue, and the more colourful Kakiemon where the basic blue and red imari colours were supplemented by green, yellow and other colours. Gilding, catering to European tastes added richness to the ware. Motifs common in classical imari ware and copied by European potters include pine, prunus and bamboo, the chrysanthymum, and the crane. European imitations of the oriental Imari Ware were quickly produced by the major European factories of Meissen and Vincennes and in the early s the Worcester factory produced the first British ware copying the palette and design of the Japanese and Chinese ware.
